Hello I am the mother of a 6 year old autistic boy Henri and a 7 year old daughter. We live in France. For 2 years we ran a home program based on the son rise principles. We now feel our son needs a structured environment and should go to school. Unfortunately in France there are only a handful of schools for autistic children, and they are all ABA. So we are ready to move to the States if we can find a good non-ABA school. Also we want our daughter to attend a french-american school. Please can anyone help us in our search ? Can you find us names of schools and towns that could suit us ?
Thank you

Check into River Street school in Windsor, CT. It's through CREC. They have a specialized Autistic program. Try calling (860) 524-4052.

Let me know how you turn out. My sister is a behavior analyst specializing in autistic children. She received her degrees in Connecticut, but has since relocated to RI.

The Gengras Center in West Hartford seems to be a more appropriete place, it provides a structured environment for children with special needs while still closely resembling a mainstream school. Riverstreet has a strict aba program while the program at Gengras is only loosely based on aba practices.

I'm not sure which school would be best but look into Seattle - Seattle School District. Although the University of Washington has a program for children below age 6, that is based mainly on ABA, you might find other schools for children 6 and up that are less so. Even the UW's program (EEU) uses a more naturalistic ABA style.

Try looking into the Seattle School District in Washington State. The University of Washington is involved in a lot of research on Autism which greatly impacts this area. Even though their school for children under 6 uses ABA it is a more naturalistic approach to ABA.

You might also want to consider Whiting Lane Elementary, also in West Hartford. They do have a team dedicated to teaching children with autism. Although I don't know how much of it is based on ABA principles (if it is at all), I know they work with autistic children there, and Whiting Lane has a very good reputation. (One of the kindergarten teachers received the state's teacher of the year award about two months ago.) Also, there's quite a few French expatriates I've met who live in town as well.
