Hello everyone! I was hoping some of you may be able to help my husband and I with a move from New Haven County to Lower Fairfield County. My husband and I are both 28 years old, and we have a 7 month old daughter. We currently own a condo in Branford, but my husband works in Stamford and the commute is starting to become too much. We know we want to have more kids, so we would like to upgrade to a house. We want something west of New Haven. My husband mentioned West Haven, but I have heard that it is not a good town to raise children in? What we would really like is to be in Fairfield county, but we don't know if we will be able to afford anything there. What about Stamford itself? I know it is a city, but is it safe and clean, with good schools? We really want a nice place to raise Julia, and we are hoping to find something similar to Branford but closer to my husband's job. Anyone have any input? TIA!

You are facing a problem that many face, trying to be close to Stamford on a limited budget. West Haven is a very nice town but the schools there score under the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. Many people in West Haven do send their children to private schools particularly at the high school level. It is generally a clean and safe town though it is not similar to Branford. You might want to consider neighboring Milford or Stratford for more affordable towns with better performing schools. Plus they are closer to Stamford. Jay

Although not on the coast, most people also look at Shelton when they're considering Milford and Stratford.
