liberal towns in CT?
Hi folks. I am a Fairfield County native, now living in New Haven. My wife and I are looking to relocate to a smaller town, and here is our ideal:
- Rural (not suburban)
- Reasonably priced (Fairfield County is out of the question)
- A decent number of liberals (please, no flames - it's not that we dislike conservatives, we just lean left and would like to have some neighbors who share our values)
- Good public schools (small class size and good arts programs are key)
Do any particular towns come to mind? We might not find a town that has all of our wants, but who knows.
We have been looking at houses in Durham and Middlefield (near Middletown), and we are thinking of turning our search northward to places like Hebron and Canton.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I have lived in Fairfield County, Hartford and New Haven - so please feel free to ask me about any of those places.

The most 'libera'l town in Connecticut is Salisbury in the Litchfield hills of Litchfield county-however housing prices tend to be high. You might try Stonington in southeastern CT along the shoreline-Mystic also is very progressive. Hebron is another town that is very popular with progressive young families-it might be your best bet.

Thanks Dragon. We've given up on the small, rural towns (though Hebron was on our list). We're now looking in Hamden, which seems to have its share of liberals.

I am sure you will like Hamden- and I fully undertsand your desire to be around liberal thinking people- I feel the same way.

I'm not sure how liberal the entire populace of Monroe is, but I'm liberal and I like it here. Our town government seems to have a tradition of a majority of Republicans in it, but always with a Democratic Town Selectman, so it's bipartisan. The crime rate is extremely low and I love it here.
If you can wait a bit, housing prices here may take a dip, just like everywhere else.

Madison is fine. We vote liberal except for local because we like our property taxes kept in check. Schools on CT Mastery are #1 to 4 in all subjects

I'm a liberal here in Cheshire. The folks in town like to think it's overwhelmingly conservative, but the voting record shows it being closer to 45/55 in favor of conservative.

I thought a strong liberal value was "diversity", and "coexisting". Just can't do it with conservatives?? I think this is funny.

It's funny how liberals accuse conservatives of being close minded and in- tolerant. I dont give a hoot as to your political leanings. Why the heck would that matter? Could you not find something relevant to talk about with your conservative neighbor?

The real chore in Connecticut would be to find a town that is NOT full of liberals.
