How did you get your position? I moved to CT from NY 4 yrs ago and I've been applying to both for about 3 yrs now. I have a Bachelors in Business Administration and Management, I'm currently getting my Masters in Human Services. I also have solid years of experience in Hospital Administration, Managed Care and great references AND I live less than 10 mins away from both. What's wrong? I'm very discouraged.

I have worked at Yale University for 20 years, and unfortunately, one USUALLY has to know someone to get in. Many people get hired, though, through the "casual" system. A casual worker is one who is absolutely a temp. At the end of the day you owe the U nothing and they owe you nothing in return. You will be paid at the end of each week. There are no benefits or security BUT it's a great door-opener. In some job sections, this is the ONLY way to get hired actually. These jobs would be service and maintenance and food workers. Yale is a unionized workplace, so there are strict regulations on how long you can be kept as a casual before they must either hire you, or let you go. There always seems to be ways around this though. Casuals usually get paid a slightly higher rate because there are no benefits attached. Folks are usually shocked when they are hired on as regulars because their rate usually drops!
