Hi I am taking a job at NH hospital.
My husband and I are relocating from Ohio.
We are late 20's no children looking for a two bedroom apt/condoW
We are thinking around 1000-1300 for rent.

What areas to live should we be looking at?
What are the commute times from these areas?
What time is rush hr in CT?
How is transport in the city?

We both have cars don't mind commuting, how is public transport in the area?

There are many nice areas in and around New Haven to live. Within the city itself you could consider Westville and East Rock. Just outside the city are towns like Hamden, East Haven and West Haven. Commuting from these towns are not a problem since you do not even have to get on a highway. Jay

After reading just the title, I was thinking that I would prefer living in the car.

You can probably find something in East Rock for the amount you listed--check the New Haven section of Craigslist. Public transportation would take you all the way down from East Rock to the hospital, with a possible transfer at the Green. Driving would take you about 5-10 minutes; in rush hour, it could take 15-20 depending on the day.

Westville might take you a little longer because the main routes into the city get crowded at rush hour - trying to get from one side of New Haven to the other (that's East Rock to Westville) around 5:30 pm has taken me up to 30 minutes.

Here's the public transportation map for New Haven: CTTransit - Connecting the Community

Buses are $1.25 a ride and you can buy a monthlong pass at grocery stores.

Some people also choose to walk or bike in New Haven, although if you work night shifts or get off work late, I would not advise walking and you would need to be very cautious on your bike (helmets, reflective gear, etc.)

To rent an apartment, East Rock would probably be easier. Most apartments are in multi-family homes as opposed to traditional apartment buildings. To rent a condo, you may want to look across the border in Hamden.

West Haven's a nice town (some parts have a beachy feel) and it looks like it could be an easy bus ride to Yale-New Haven.
