As I stated before I have interviewed for a position within my company that would encompass Northeastern CT, what I now know is called the "Quiet Corner". I have tried to find some houses or rentals in this area just to get an idea of what I am up against but the info is very little. Maybe if I have a better idea of exactly where I want to go that would help. So far I think I am leaning towards Putnam, but not totally sure of it. We are looking for an inexpensive area with a good elementary school. Does that exist?
So if you were me....which "corner" of the "Quiet Corner" do you think is best, and why? I appreciate any feedback, thanks so much!

The 'quiet Corner' encompasses all of Windham county, parts of Tolland county, especially the towns of Willington, Mansfield, Coventry, Stafford Springs and Tolland and perhaps Columbia. Also Northern New London county, with towns like Lebanon, Franklin and Baltic.

Putnam located in the extreme north east corner of the state is probably the 'quintessential' quiet corner town of any size.

Google Putnam and go the town web site- its very informative. I also liked nearby Pomfret and Woodstock as well- though are much smaller and do not have much in the way of amenities. These towns have much charm- I was in the region late last Autumn, drove past the Pomfret Academy, and then visited Putnam- and the town IMHO and area are really scenic and beautiful.

Another possibility is a bit further south in Norwich- while technically not in the 'quiet corner'- more part of 'Mystic Country and New London/Groton- it still has eastern Connecticut flavor- though much larger then Putnam population wise.

Putnam has a very pleasant center, and has a fair number of shopping venues. Since Putnam is the largest town in the region, it is here you will have the best prospects at rentals.

Willimantic is another option- however I think Putnam is a better place to live currently.

Lukedaddy,

We just sold our house in NC and are moving back to The Quiet Corner in 3 weeks. We lived in the woods of south killingly in Windham County but we're not going back to Killingly for various reasons (schools being the main one).

Putnam is on our list and they have a new mayor who's made some big changes to the town. On July 14th, the Hartford Orchestra will be playing there for free and you'll find a nice little downtown that's improved quite a bit since we left (nearly two years ago).

Our favorite is Woodstock and Pomfret...but seriously looking at Putnam. Although schools need improvement (which they're working on.)

Brooklyn is nice too (a mix) and being developed.

Check out Villager Newspapers for all the latest small town news from some of the towns you'll be looking at:

Hey Greg, thanx for the info. Are you going to but or rent in Putnam? When I look at rent.com or craigslist I can't find anything for Putnam.

We're looking mainly in Woodstock, Pomfret, or Brooklyn. It's been very difficult finding anything online and we do have a realtor friend helping us too. At this point, we're probably going to stick our stuff in storage and drive around until we either run out of gas or find a place. I'm thinking a majority of the rental homes up there are either advertised locally (if at all) or they'll stick a sign in the yard.
