The OP is looking to work in Stamford, not New York. And the crime in Norwalk is nowhere nearly as high as it is in other cities (can you say Bridgeport?). Besdies, I mentioned Norwalk as an option because Stamford is very expensive for renting - oneof the highest in the nation (if not THE highest, which it was considered at one point and may still be.)

Norwalk has been booming with employment lately. I dont know what it is. When I was looking for a tenant for my rentals, all I kept getting was people who are being transferred or found a job in Norwalk. It was strange.

And I think something big is coming to downtown which will bring in even more jobs.

But rental is a rental...there's no appreciation with that. Rents have stayed steady past couple years. You can find a studio and a 1BR for 1200 easily in Norwalk. Only 10 minutes from Stamford.

Default Apartments at Corenerstone

We are in Stamford since last 7 months and can say that Stamford is a very safe and happening city. You can find 1 or 2 bedroom apartments in your budget of $1000 to $1550 just near downtown stamford and its about 10 min drive to UBS. The apartments are called Cornerstone. You can check out the website and figure out.

Default I wouldnt go as far as 20 miles....

Its not necessary. Norwalk and Stamford are your best bets but I do agree that you should try Criags List although thats hard if you dont know the area.
