Hi all,

I've been reading through some posts but I have some specifiers in my search for an apartment/condo, so I'm helping some knowledgeable CT folks can help me out as I have no friends/family to consult about this move!

I'm going to be in a residency program at the West Haven VA and was wondering which towns would be good for me to look to rent a place. I'm in my late 20s, no kids, and would prefer someplace not far from the VA to minimize commute. I have no idea what direction the traffic flows though on I-95 during rush hour. It would also be great to live where there is a train station that can take me to NY (I have family and a significant other in NJ and plan to visit regularly on weekends), but all that though would like second priority in comparison to safety and price. I've heard some areas around West/New Haven are spotty in terms of safety, and my residency doesn't pay well at all, I'm afraid. I heard about Milford, but was wondering if there are any other options available.

Any thoughts?? (And thanks in advance!)

West Haven itself would work for you. There are a lot of multi-family homes there where you could find a rental. Check Craigslist for listings. There are only a couple of neighborhoods in West Haven that you will need to be careful in but even they are not too bad. I think there was another post on West Haven that told which ones to be concerned with. To catch a train into New York though you would have to go to Milford or New Haven. Jay

I go to the VA once a year for a checkup and to stay on their rolls. You'll like it there. I think WH may have the highest population density of any town in the state. You'll find a place easily. GL.

Post Relocating to West Haven area

I am also moving to this area with my husband, and we were told that Hamden is a good area, however I think I would rather be closer to NYC/the coast. He will be working in West Haven and I don't have a job yet, so I want to be sure I have good options there as well without hopefully having to commute too much. I've heard good things about Milford but it sounds like it is all rather pricey. We want to be sure to have a safe area yet our budget is rather small. Safety would definitely rank higher than square footage. I would appreciate any helpful info on good areas to look that are decent rentals yet affordable. We are in our mid-20s with no children. We will be renting so if you know of any specific complex that's a good one or anything-I'd appreciate the info! (Or sites to go to to search for rental homes/apartments) We are moving from the midwest so I will only be able to come out for a short time to check everything out. It's been hard for me to figure out where the neighborhoods are that people refer to so specific information would be great!

I posted this on here because I'm thinking this information would also benefit the original poster and then whoever can help only needs to post once!

THANKS!
