I am looking into areas to relocate after I graduate next June. I have noticed that schools in Connecticut pay very well, but how is the cost of living? And is there a great need for teachers in the state? Any help and other information about teachers in Connecticut would be appreciated.

depends on what area you move to.
Houses are expensive in CT, some areas more than others.
So the increase in pay may be spent on housing costs and gas to commute.
What area are you interested in?
Many nice towns in the northern half of CT.
I spent many years in Southbury, that area is nice.

I think teachers belong to unions. It is few profession left that does collective bargaining. Work 9 months with summers off. What a deal! As you know public school pays better than private school. Depending on the town and how the negotiation went, some towns will pay better than others. Some even have signing bonus; free tuition for higher degree, professional days off benefits.

Many teachers are retiring. With the push from teacher union to have small class size, the demand for teachers are high. Salary will be up in the next 10 years. However, after the next 8-10 year boom, census show dropping school age children like the 80s.

THere is an urgent need for teachers in CT-esp science and math.

Avoid Fairfield county however totally- the pay though near the top nationally for teachers in the state will not allow you to afford decent housing in the southwest corner- a better bet is the central and northern parts of the state- housing costs here are much lower and a fair value- and slightly above the national median in cost.
