Can people please give me their opinion of living in Vernon? We are a family of 4 moving from FL. Kids are middle school school age. I am searching for posts on Vernon and not finding much if any info. We would be living in a rental home there. I need information about the safety, the schools (middle and hs), and is it a nice place for families with young teen/preteens. Any information you can give would be so helpful!
Thank you!

You do not indicate your price range or give much information on what you are looking for so it is hard to comment further. You can find information on schools in Vernon at the web sites below.

Vernon schools generally perform at or just under the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. Overall, Vernon is a nice middle class community with some nice neighborhoods and a few questionable ones. Certainly though there are not any that I would classify as scary. Jay

It depends where you are in vernon. There is vernon and then there is rockville. Rockville is part of vernon but is not so nice. Vernon on the other hand is a nice town.

Vernon like everywhere else has it's nice areas and it's bad areas. Unfortunately it shares the high school (don't know about middle schools) with Rockville (alias Crackville) and that can cause some problems for you. If you live in a nice area you won't worry about your safety and can really enjoy your life, if you live in Rockville you may not enjoy it.
Vernon in my opinion is better than Manchester but worse than Tolland/Ellington/etc for schools/quality of life. However if you live in Ellington/Tolland or a similar area you'll be that much farther from things. It really depends on what your ultimate goals are.
What part of Florida are you moving from and why are you moving? That may help us gauge if Vernon is a good place.

Thanks so much for all the responses! We are living now in Seminole County, north of Orlando, and IMHO, the best public school system overall in Central FL. That being said, our high school is not without problems. We live in a very nice neighborhood now, yet we have lived in all kinds of places, some more rural, and have been happy. I guess what is difficult for me is the lack of rental homes in the Hartford area. The nicer areas have old inventory and are relatively expensive. I am disabled and can't live in a several story home with the laundry in the basement. So, it will be a problem finding that perfect place.
Thanks again for all your information!

You are moving to an older part of the country so you should not expect to find a lot of newer homes. You will also not find a lot of one story homes but there are some. I understand that rentals are scarce here too. we have had this complaint before on this board. Not sure what to tell you other than to wish you the best in your search for a home. Jay
