School system
In both towns, you can send your kids to Woodstock Academy for free. Good school.

I live in Canterbury, but I've heard good things about the Brooklyn school system. As for Woodstock Academy, my son went to high school there and I found it to be an excellent school. Very dedicated teachers. Not sure of real estate prices there maybe between 200K and 300K for something decent. Hope this helps.

Very popular areas in eastern Connecticut- you made a good choice!
RE prices are between 200-300K and up.

depends on what you want
Putnam is a bit bigger than Brooklyn and there's more as far as shopping goes. However, Putnam seems kind of run down and more of a place for younger blue collar folks, whereas a lot of large single family homes are being built in Brooklyn.

never been there
But Putnam Ct was explained to me by a long time Connecticut resident that it is the inbred capital of the north. Hope this helps!

Brooklyn, CT...
Hi, Joanne,
It all depends what you want from a town. It's growing and changing (and not necessarily for the best) at an alarming rate from the small, historical and agricultural town it was when I moved here 5 years ago to becoming very over-populated...more and more shopping centers are going up; zonings are changing...we're quoted "progress" but it's progress for whom? There's more traffic. Taxes and prices for properties are going sky-high, especially the taxes due to the new school that's being planned for Prince Hill Rd (my tax payment jumped over $100 a month more this year). It used to be a quiet, peaceful, little town. Now I see people pulled over at least once a week by the resident state trooper for various traffic violations, drunk drivers, etc. I have kids teasing and tormenting my dogs almost every night of the week because they love to hear them bark. (I live on Rte. 6 so I get all the action) I moved here with the intent of raising a few goats and sheep and planting a few vegetables, loving the fact that it was primarily a quiet, farming community but close enough to "civilization" that I didn't have drive for hours just to pick up a gallon of milk. All of that is changing. Brooklyn is a great town for someone wanting more of a city life rather than a quiet country life these days. As for the schools, I don't have children so can't speak from personal experience but have heard mixed reviews by various friends who do have children in the school system. All in all though the school system does have a good reputation. Thanks!
The Herbal Kitty

Putnam for years; as did eastern Connecticut had a rep of being 'backwards' and having a lower per capita income then the rest of the state. Some of the towns where run down and 'depressed'.
The 'quiet Corner' has been on a roll however, with Putnam becoming an art and antique center, with its downtown nicely revitalized.
The area (including Brooklyn) is seeing an influx of those fleeing the rate race seeking solitude.

Putnam has it's own high school and does not go to Woodstock Academy.
Brooklyn students have a choice between Woodstock Academy and Killingly High. Don't let the Academy fool you, it is a public high school but better than Killingly academic wise and increasingly better for athletics these days.
