searched for some summer home towns last summer and really like the Woodstock, Vt., and then the Salisbury, Ct. area.

what can anyone tell me about Ct. vs. Vt., and the area in question. We like a small town, with a bit of sophistication ( a couple of good restaurants, green mkt., nice coffee shop, a bit of retail, etc.), and want a semi-rural homestead i.e. small house with some acreage.

Golf, Fly fishing waters, and gardening are important as well.

How are the property taxes (and tax in general) from one state to the next?

anything we should know??

thanks so much

I don't really know anything about VT, but I live in the taconic/twin lakes area of salisbury. One good thing about salisbury is that taxes are about 1/3 of the surrounding areas. Taxes are easily found online, especially if you're looking at houses. The mill rate for salisbury is only 9.3 compared to in the 20's and 30's in most of the areas.
It's a very nice, quiet area, with charming small town centers and great restaurants that use alot of local and organic ingredients. Tons of outdoor stuff, esp. if you like hiking, the appalachian trail is less than a mile from my home. The Houstatonic river is almost a fly fishing meca. Some of the better golf courses close by are probally Silo Ridge http://www.siloridge.com/ just over the border in NY, or the Norfolk country club, http://www.norfolkcountryclub.com/pages/home.html (broken link)
but there are also plenty of others. Probally half the homes in the area are weekend/summer homes. There's TONS of properties on the market, ranging from 250K to 10 million. Let me know if you'd like help finding a good local realtor.

Roger
