We have heard that Middlebury is a nice town and we like the location on the map. Does anyone know if there are things to do there for a family (besides Quassy)? What's the downtown like? Any hiking trails?

Anything you can tell me about Middlebury would be great. We are a family with small children/babies.

Thanks!

Middlebury is a pretty small town with only about 7,000 residents. It does not really have a downtown, just a couple of small shopping centers. The town has mostly a rural character to it with homes generally on larger lots. the schools are considered to be very good with students performing well above the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. The links below will provide you with more information on the schools there. Jay

While not a "city" downtown, Middlebury does have a well formed "town center". It's off RT64 at the intersection of South/North streets and Whittemore road. The Westover school is there too. It's an all girls prep school. My cousin lived down the road - we had lots of fun as young boys over there.

OP yes there are lots of outdoor things to do such as Hop Brook State Park, Whittemore Glen state park, Bristol Park etc etc.

I live in nerby Oxford so know Middlebury well. Middlebury has wonderful parks and playgrounds and is near the state bridle trail It is home to the Museum of the Golden Age of trucking which little boys (and girls too) seem to love and there is Fun Factor - a bouncy house place-great for burning off energy during the winter.

Middlebury has Quassy (I'm not so sure if it's a plus to live too close to Quassy) but I'm not sure if it has a town beach like many other towns in the area do. They do however have a brand new pool and tennis club called Edgewood.

The OP asked about a "downtown" which to me means they are looking for an area with a group of stores and restaurants which Middlebury does not really have. The center is nice and charming though. Jay

Middlebury is beautiful and affluent. I loved it (Tranquility Rd is so gorgeous) but the location/price dud not suit our needs.
