@Jay--- I actually dislike Gold's. My father used to call their sandwiches "love" sandwiches-- Two pieces of bread so in love nothing came between them. For me Rein's is all about the breakfasts. The sandwiches are passable... Not up to NY standards. The breakfasts are great. A couple of my favorites include the lox omelet, strawberry french toast and the potato pancakes.

Is it "real" NY deli? Maybe real second-tier NY deli. It compares favorably to Sarge's, but not Stage, 2nd Avenue or Carnegie. But then again, it's three minutes from my house

"No NY TV stations on Comcast. I guess I'm not in the NY area any more. What the heck is New England Cable News"

im in Middletown and we used to get Fox 5 in NY (it was nice for Giant games) but Fox 61 opened some lawsuit against Comcast to remove Fox 5 from their lineup. apparently it worked because we dont get Fox 5 anymore. so basically you probably wouldn't get any NY stations anyway even if Vernon had them before. even moreso being further east.
and boo on the Skankees..

i lived there for 2 years back in the 80's but it was so much different back then. so long ago there was no Buckland mall yet. when i revisited in 98, noticed how much things have changed. but i liked it back then. was second only to Framingham MA as far as favorite places i've lived.

Re: Little Mark's-- Do they do "links" (sausage)?

I am a big seafood fan, so Elmo's Dockside will be high on the list.
As far as I know they only have a "Texas Hot Sausage".

As for seafood, if you really enjoy it Elmo's is great, but do youself a favor and make the 20 minute ride to City Fish in Wethersfield. Fresh seafood from Boston daily. They supply most of the area restaurants - including Elmo's I'm sure.

They have a small restaurant attached to the fish market too. Best in the area, hands down.

City Fish Market

You did not like Gold's? What was wrong with it? I have not been there since I was a kid and that was a real LONG time ago. Jay

@Jviello Central Fish Market looks like its right up my alley. I'll be checking it out on Thursday to get "supplies" for the weekend. I had an excellent grilled seafood salad for dinner at Naked Fish near Boston just a couple of hours ago....

@Jay re: Gold's... Never left there full. ALways felt unsatisfied by their portions and thought the sandwiches were expensive for the amount of meat you received. Not impressed by the knishes and the kasha was gross. I will admit the matzoh ball soup was pretty good...

Mlassoff,

As a fellow Vernon-ite, I say, "Welcome!"

One of the owners of Rein's is a neighbor of mine. Small world.

Where along I-91 is your commute? If it's in Windsor or north, do you hop on the 291 connector instead of picking up I-84 in Hartford?

Regarding Comcast, as soon as AT&T U-Verse was available, I dropped Comcast like a hot potato. U-Verse lists some NY stations but I don't receive them on the package I have. Perhaps they're available on the higher tiers. I don't believe the NY stations were even an option on Comcast, with the possible exception of YES and MSG.

Thanks. I don't commute. My business involves traveling nationwide about once a week. So my commute, so far, has been 84-291-91 to Bradley.

I've had poor experiences with AT&T in the past.... I am happy with Comcast, actually. Just getting used to Al Terzi...

I've lived in Vernon for 30+ years.

Best Thai (and my favorite restaurant) Sawadee in South Windsor
Reins is the best NY style deli you are going to here. If it's not good enough you are out of luck.
Best BBQ is at Black Eyed Sally's in Hartford. Not a fan of Little Marks or Little Taste of Texas.
Try the rails-to-trails parks for walking/riding bikes.
Pepe's in Manchester (the one near the mall) is the best pizza east of the river.
I like Harry's Pizza in West Hartford better however. Try the salad with balsamic vinagrette dressing.
New Englanders are private people. Your neighbors won't generally bug you. If you are friendly too them they will be friendly back once they get over the shock of a stranger talking to them.
Don't speed with NY or Mass plates. They are ticket magnets.
Hartford is an early town. Most large employers start work at 8 am. Rush hour starts early.
You will pay property tax on your car. The mill rate is the same as the town's property tax rate.
Houses don't settle, they close. Closings are done by lawyers. Towns (not counties) keep property records.
Cardio Express is an inexpensive gym. LA Fitness in S Windsor is where the in crowd goes.
Go to La Casa Bella in S Windsor for Italian far superior to Angellino's.

That's a start. Welcome to Vernon!
