Was thinking about Stamford but then heard in 2010 the car park will be reduced due to major work (please let me know if this has not started yet and Stamford is still a good bet).

I have heard the New Haven lot fills up by 9:00am.

Figure I'll get to the New Haven/Stamford area around noon. Are there any other stations in between that have safe (for 2 night overnight) and available parking (at noon) that would be suitable and from which I can get a late night train back on Saturday with no hassle when traveling with young kids?

Probably South Norwalk - there's a parking garage there. Most of the suburban towns have limited parking and no garage.

New Haven isn't near Stamford, so saying you're expecting to get to the New Haven/Stamford "area" around noon is unrealistic. There's no such thing as a New Haven/Stamford area. They're not even in the same county. Stamford is only around 30 minutes from NYC (by car). New Haven is around an hour from NYC (by car).

You could try Greenwich station, or So. Norwalk as has been suggested.

For safety, I would park at Westport, Darien or Fairfield.
