Sorry to hear that. Do not go to Diamond District in NYC unless you want to be pressured. Hopefully you'll find a local trustworthy jewlery.

Do not give it to her on an occassion. LOL

I would recommend travelling to Manhattan-they have the best deals. After much shopping, the jeweler we used was David S. Diamonds-located between 45th and 46th St-on 5th Ave. He has the best deals and stands behind his stones. Even competitive jewelers recommended him for his fine diamonds.

Depends on the store... some have high-pressure sleazy used car-types, but plenty of others are very reputable and are there to help.

I 2nd this...no offense to anyone that has done this, but most women don't want to be proposed to as a christmas gift or... shudder... on valentines day. Yes, they'll be happy no matter what, but it's more fun if it's a random day. Gives the future wife another excuse to demand a gift.

And also the other way around. Stuff happens and so does divorce. At least you can take the ring back if not given on a holiday or birthday. lol
