I am looking for a town to spend about 2 days in this June. We're vacationing up in Maine for several days and want to stay in CT for a few also on the way home. We will be on 95 so somewhere close to that would be great! There will be me and husband, youngest daughter and our 3 1/2 old Grandson. Looking for somewhere safe that has cute shops, antique stores, maybe a natural food grocery type store, coffee shop. A place where we can walk around town a lot, sit by the water, enjoy the beauty of the town, etc. We've been to Mystic so I'm not interested in going there this time, looking for somewhere different.

Thanks for the advice!!

Based on your description, take a look at Guilford. I-95 runs through it if I'm not mistaken and it's really nice. They do have a Main Street in Guilford Center with restaurants, shops and coffee houses. I think there's a town green across the street from the shops as well. The southern tip of town sits on the LI sound, but I don't know how easy it will be to access it. Still, I think this might be a nice place to spend an afternoon. Check it out.

If you're willing to go off I-95 a bit, Litchfield is a great place to visit.

Mystic. Totally Mystic, in June. There's the Mystic Aquarium, the seaport, the docks, the shopping center, the village, Mystic Pizza (the original had a different name, until they turned it into a movie). There's nothing that says New England more than Mystic in June. Plus, it's a great segue to coastal Maine.

If you'd like to check out a Bed & Breakfast, then head to Madison. This place is right in the center of town: Scranton Seahorse Inn

There is also Hammonasset State Park with decent beaches: http://www.ct.gov/dEP/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325210

Madison's downtown is not right on the water, but it is only a short drive. Beautiful town.

Wasn't Stonington's downtown just ravaged by floods from the recent storm? Normally great suggestion, but I believe much of their downtown is still in the cleanup stages.

I didn't even notice that sentence saying they'd been to Mystic.

Well in that case - what about Hammonasset State Park...

I vote for Essex I was there a few years ago, and it's a really cute town. Great restuarants, a really nice walkable main street, a nice old Inn (I think the Griswald Inn?). It's on the water, right where the connecticut river and the long island sound meet.
