I will be moving to New Haven for work at the end of May 2010. I am looking to rent a studio or 1BR apartment. I would love to hear some recommendations as to rental companies/landlords/apartment complexes to look into. I'm looking to rent from someone fair, personable, and responsive, with well-maintained but affordable properties. I'm interested in any pleasant neighborhood within about 10 miles of New Haven. Thank you!

If you're planning to rent within New Haven I would actually avoid some of the larger apartment companies and complexes. There are a few nicer ones near the Green but the rest have not received good reviews. For within New Haven, Craigslist is probably your best bet, although I don't know of any landlords in particular that are good or bad and it can be difficult to tell from a listing. This time of year could be tricky to rent - most apartments directly in New Haven will not free up until early or mid June as the students graduate and leave.

The neighborhoods within New Haven that everyone will tell you are downtown, East Rock, and Westville. If you're working in the city center and don't want to drive, the first two are probably your best bet. I don't know much about outside New Haven, so perhaps other posters can help with that.

I know someone renting an apartment in New Haven that currently is looking for someone to fill it. Though I believe it's a 2 bedroom and I'm not sure what you're budget is. But I think they are looking for 1400 a month.
Let me know if you want more info and I could get it for you...Thats all I know off the top of my head. Also, I believe it's close to Yale.
