Default Moving to Waterbury Area, CT

My partner and I are relocating to CT for her job in Waterbury. We are a late 20's lesbian couple, no kids, combined income around $90,000/yr. We are looking for a nice area, with a natural/outdoorsy feel, open minded people who are ok with a gay couple in their neighborhood, culture, and maybe a small-town feel. Somewhere close to places we can go hiking/camping would be great. We would be looking for apartments for under $1200/month. Which neighborhoods might be suitable for us and even some specific apartments if you know any?

Waterbury really is a strange place when it comes to openmindness. its the fifth largest city but the city actually has a huge conservative base because of a huge amount of churchgoers. The people in waterbury are very judgemental.

Are u looking for a home inside or outside of waterbury?

I don't know that I entirely agree with Brasscitybluenwhite. Like any city, I am sure this is true by neighborhood but overall I think Connecticut is very open-minded. As long as you are not in people's face with it, they really won't care what you are.

Since you want a more small-town feel I would suggest looking in nearby towns rather than the City of Waterbury itself. Towns to look at would include Southbury, Woodbury, Middlebury. Watertown and Wolcott. there are many more nearby as well since Waterbury is on the edge of beautiful and rural Litchfield County. You could easily live in one of the towns there and commute. Good luck, Jay

Your budget is IMO out of whack for what you want. Your income is fine, but housing costs too low. Southbury would probably fit your needs just fine, as would Cheshire, Litchfield perhaps too.

No one cares if you are gay, so you can drop all the prerequisites.

What? LOL Did you just label an entire segment of society with a single brush? I thought you hated stereotypes? I would disagree with your premise.

Default Response

We're looking to rent an apartment, not to buy a house and we don't want to live in Waterbury. Ideally, within a 30 or 40 minute drive to Waterbury. I heard Farmington is nice but didn't see much by way of apartments there. What do you think of Middletown?
As for my price range... I live in Washington DC now which has one of the highest cost of living in the country and I pay $1200 so I don't think my price range is too out of what's feasible.

Middletown is nice. It has a nice downtown area with shops and restaurants and is the home of Wesleyan University so there is a lot to do relating to the school. There are many apartments there particularly in the West Lake area which is right along I-91. Waterbury would be a half hour to 45 minutes away during rush hour. Also note that I would not call Middletown a small town but it is still very nice. It may be a good place to start and see what areas suit you best. Jay

If you read the definition of stereotype closely, you can't truly stereotype a city. I'm not judging the book of waterbury by it's cover; I've read it and I've been one of it's characters. I can only offer my honest experiences.

For example, in 2005, residents of the town of Washington asked town officials to stop posting town ordinances in the Waterbury newspaper because of offensive editorials toward homosexuals. I wouldn't characterize the comments as "liberal" in nature.

(and ermin, this response was to someone else and was by no means to be offensive to you)

I used to have a subscription to that newspaper. I couldn't see how it, especially the column by Lee Grabarz, represented the greater Waterbury area.

All the places that fit the "small town" description with everything you wanted IMO and experience require greater than $1200 per month for a rental, and then, apartments will be sparse. Those areas are the "more wealthy" and bedroom areas.

If you don't mind living in a small city like Middletown, then yes, you can find a place for $1200 no problem. But you're not going to get the small town part of it.
