I hear the picture is better than LCD and there is no longer a burn in problem? Is plasma dead or should I consider one?

Yes, you should buy it if it's a good price. Even 720i sets have great picture.

They're both good choices but it depends what you're going to use it most for. If you're going to do a lot of gaming you might be better getting a LCD.Watching movies you'll get darker rich colors with a Plasma and also a better view angle whether looking straight at it or from a side angle. Burn in can happen but not very likely. I have 2 Plasma's the oldest being 8 years and neither have any burn in problems.I have a 60" Pioneer Elite and the color depth is incredible and the HD watching a football game makes you feel like you're on the field. Here's a good article the tells the pro's and con's of both. Plasma's far from dead.

We do zero gaming, so that's not an issue. The more I am reading, the more I am leaning toward plasma. I couldn't care less about energy consumption, so that is not an issue either. We watch a lot of movies and sports. I want a rich picture, so I may just go with plasma. Thanks for the input.

I have an LCD and the picture is plenty "rich." Further, I've seen them side by side and noticed precious little diff. But if you have money to burn, have at it.

IMO

I used to think my 2006 32" Sanyo 720p LCD had a great picture at one time. It truly doesn't anymore. It blurs and the blacks are a joke. Sure it is a crapola brand, but at the time I got what I could afford. I still plan on keeping it and putting it in the bedroom.

An interesting quote from that Yahoo article:

"The fact is, plasmas have a slight edge when it comes to a truly cinematic picture. If you are a cinephile who likes to watch a lot of different film sources such as Blu-ray discs or DVDs, plasma is your best bet"

That's me!!! I want a great, cinematic picture. Now I have to work on the surround system!!! UGH!!!

I have had an LG Plasma for about 4 years and love it. I shopped around based on the models that I liked. I did a search online for Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City (when it was around), and many other stores. The picture was superior to similiar LCD's in the price range for a 50" and I have had no regrets. Each is supposed to have slight advantages over the other (Plasma and LCD) based on what you are using it for (gaming, sports viewing,etc...) but honestly the technology for both works quite well; I just prefer the Plasmas and now the price range is even closer than prior. Also the many companies have closed the gap and cheaper companies like Vizio are now making comparable and not inferior products. My suggestion is to go to a few stores and look at them all and then check Consumer Reports,etc... once you have a few models that you are interested in. If you're worried about issues, just get an extended warranty to cover it, but I doubt you'll need it. Good Luck.

P.S. For your information, Best Buy was one of the highest priced stores for all brands when I was searching but surprisingly was the cheapest for my specific model. I also used the best buy card (not the charge card) to earn points and wound up getting a DVD/VCR combo for free with those same points.

I would not buy one if I was paying the power bill.

That said, I like to go to my kid's place and enjoy theirs. (but they can't move home with that thing!!)

I thought the plasma's were energy certified?

No matter, we pay 9.00 cents per kWh.

The way that TV tech is changing from analog (with us for 50yrs +) to HDTV to 3D to? I doubt very much that I'm going care much about the tech details of the next TV I buy.

I'm gonna walk in the store and buy the first TV that is in my price range that has a decent picture for cheap. I won't care what the brand is or anything else since TV's will continue to change so fast it's a real waste of time and money to get the best TV you can buy like the old analog TV's. Those days are gone IMO.
