So I just ordered a 32gb 3rd generation ipod touch (refurbished) from Apple and I was wondering what the difference is between that one and the 4th generation and whether or not I should send the 3rd generation back and get the 4th generation instead? I would love to hear your experiences and thoughts!

RAM in the iPod Touch 4 is actually 256MB and not 512MB.
