Certainly NOT Toshiba - They haven't made good TVs since the 90s (when they were actually the best).

Sony - Only the XBR and Z series are decent (They changed their model numbers, so whatever the equivalent to the Z series now is good... XBR is still called XBR).

The best brand to go with IMO, is Samsung.

I should have specified that Samsung is best for LCD TVs. They are actually horrible for Plasma screens.

In terms of brand reliability, according to Consumer Reports, avoid LG and Samsung for Plasma, and avoid Mitsubishi and Polaroid for LCD.

I just knew this was going to be a new thread. The future. A new thread titled "So I bought a new tv after listening to advice on CD and.......". You are going to get different opinions from anyone. We buy Panasonics and have had no problems with them. They seem to last, which seems to be a problem you have mentioned. Why don't you check out Consumer Reports or some other sites on the internet. Jeez. That's what most people do.

If you sell a million TVs, there will be a few duds, and a few people that just can't be pleased. We've got a 47" Vizio 1080p LCD TV and haven't had a single problem with it. My only complaint is that it won't shut itself off when the HTPC turns off the video signal.

Also have a 32" LG LCD in the bedroom, and a 60" Mitsubishi DLP in our basement home theater. The LG is great; never had a problem with it and I have zero complaints about it. We've had the Mitsubishi for less than two weeks. We're still working out our seating options, and the audio system is scheduled to be delivered on Monday, so we haven't used it much. We watched one movie on it right after we got it, just to check it out, and it was pretty stunning - and that was a standard def DVD, not a blue ray or anything. I expect that we'll be very happy with it.

It probably come to LG or Sony.

I keep hearing a lot about Samsung but it's just so hard to get a brand for a TV that is the current brand for the TV you are replacing.
