Planning to get my son his first music player for his upcoming 9th birthday. It is between:

Sony S-544
8G, plays videos, big screen, external speakers for when he doesn't want headphones...around $80. Could go to 16G for $130 ish.

OR

Ipod Nano

Doesn't play video but is a touch screen which he would think is cool. More expensive at 8G, but has that IPOD name, ya know?

I am leaning toward the Sony but DH and I both have Ipods so I don't know any differently.

Thoughts or recommendations?

(I'm not getting him an Ipod touch...too $ for a 9 year old, IMO. And he already has a DS so I don't think he would need it for games.)

My 8 yr old niece has the purple Sony one. My brother didn't want to spend AS much money on the Nano when all she really would be doing is listening to music so if by chance it was missplaced, he wouldn't feel as bad. She's had it for a few months now and loves it. Works like a champ. She took it on a trip to Florida and it kept her entertained throughout the plane ride. Plus the interface is very easy for her to use but then again the iPod/iTunes one isn'tthat difficult also. Plus most 8 yr olds these days are more tech savvy than most.

Thanks for the info.

I feel the same way about the $....my kid is pretty responsible, but still.

I have read about a lot of parents buying their 8-10 year olds the Itouch and the Kindle Fire....I'm thinking there is no way I want to spend $200 on something like that where if they drop it, it's toast....

But maybe that's just me.

How about a library card? It's free.

Seriously, I would stay away from anything apple. Too cumbersome. iTunes. synchronization hassles. No ipod.

Thanks, but he has one already.

You can't seriously be against listening to music can you?
