I have a Zenith FM radio at the foot of my bed.
Most of the time, the reception is fine.
The last few nights, when I am close enough to the radio to adjust the tuner, the reception is fine. If I back away, and lie down on the bed to listen for awhile, the quality is distorted. I move close to the unit to try to finely tune the tuner and the reception is fine.
If I remember correctly, an FM antenna should be 36 inches long for maximum reception value. It should be straight, and might have to be aligned with reference to the station source. Once you have your 36-inch straight antenna, it can be connected to your radio by any suitable wiring arrangement. Your body also works as an antenna, so if you are standing close to your wire antenna, you can interfere with the reception. Try to position the antenna so it is several feet away from anywhere anyone will be walking around.
The power cord leaving the back of the radio, was looped into a clip and screwed to the back of the radio, before it went to the electrical outlet.
It appears the electrical cord was being an antenna, of sorts. The screw was loose. While it was loose, I did add a 30 inch piece of standard antenna wire. It plays fine now.
Maybe it was the loose screw, maybe a combination of that and adding a 30 inch wire.
