I see no one replied to this. The ISP's tend to overplay how much bandwidth you need. I had 1.5 DSL for years. Streamed Netflix, played online games. No issues. 3 should be fine for most thing.
I do have 10 now, which is better, but 1.5 served my needs for a long time.

Just to confirm that I understand something correctly:

If I want to get current episodes of the series programs on HBO and Showtime, I MUST have cable or satellite. Is that correct? If there is an alternative, please please please, share it.

smart TVs maybe the end of cable TVs. as for me, i have websites i go to to see cable shows i've missed. and it's commercial free unlike in hulu. In fact 1 of my sis has no cable but she has internet and is satisfied with netflix running on their wii and xbox. it's enough entertainment for them to watch movies and old episodes of cancelled tv shows.
