Appliances or computers often give off a vague burning smell. For example I just bought a small CD player and the first few days when I used it, it gave off the burning smell (only with the CD and not the radio). My friend's VCR once did the same thing.

Also I was near computer equipment in offices and sometimes I would smell this and I never knew exactly what caused it. What causes this smell??

Ozone, dust burning off hot components, offgassing of plastics. Could be any of those.
