You don't need a digital antenna. That's just a marketing tactic. I used an old radio telescopic antenna for over a year with no problems. A simple homemade dipole would work too.

I have broadcast basic but no cable boxes. I have a tv without a qam tuner so I got this box for that reason. Except I'm only picking up 29 of over 50 channels and 7/8 of those are spanish, shopping and government. I would watch 5 of them and even then only on occasion. I've been searching the internet for months trying to find a solution as to why I'm only getting half the channels and have found nothing. The box is awesome and has a ton of features and even can record w/a hard drive attached. (albeit uncompressed). Would love to use this box.

You did not mention what type of antenna you are using. Another thing is the aiming of the antenna.

I installed this recently in my attic and am very happy with it.

You should also find out where the transmitters are in relation to your house and point the antenna correctly.
You can do that with the help on this web site.

There's no law that cable companies send broadcast channels in Clear QAM, so your cable company is probably encrypting the other 21+ channels.
