After owning a Roku it beats a Smart TV every. Which. Way. Especially if you are trying to cord cut.

What they say "over 500 channels" they mean over 500.
Now granted many of them are crap (The Plastic Surgery Channel? Really? Yes, really...) but there is a ton of quality ones: PBS and PBS KIDS was just added.

This may sound dumb but from reading am I able to watch cable channels news etc real time with Roku?

No. There is very little live TV available on a Roku. The only live 24x7 news channel is al-Jazeera. Fox News Channel is live during a handful of weekday daylight hours, Noon-5 PM Eastern IIRC.

No having both ROKO doesn't have that but it can be done technically. Our smart TV can stream anything live being streamed as it can connect to internet and has a slide out keyboard built into remote. No different than we often watch local news stations that are all live streamed when on vacation on our laptop.
