Maybe you could snag a deal from one of the posters with unused gear.

Have you tried them? I never liked using an iPad as a reader, but I love my Kobo eBook. It is very easy on the eyes and I can carry hundreds of books around with me. Plus no struggling with trying to hold a tiny print paper back open. Only downside is you really don't own the book, but there are plenty of PD books that can keep me occupied for years.

Yeah, I have to disagree with those who favored an ipad over a kindle or nook. I find the e-ink much easier on the eyes than a backlight display. As far as color is concerned, if the OP's wife would use it mostly for reading books (as opposed to magazines) and has progressed past picture books, there isn't much need for color. Also, the e-ink based readers can go weeks without needing a charge, whereas you will be looking for an outlet with the ipad in a much shorter timeframe.

Now if she wants to be able to check her email and stuff, too, then a ipad or kindle fire would be a better choice for that, but a compromise on the actual reading experience.

Agree with Bcattwood: if she wants it just for reading get the Kindle/Nook E-Reader.
Otherwise get the Kindle HD or Nook HD.

iPad should not be on your short list.

I used to be one of those "I will never buy a kindle or other ebook reader" types. Then I tried a Kindle. The first few minutes, I was thinking "I will never get used to this." I kept reading. After less than half an hour, I was completely hooked.

I read 1-3 novels a week on my Kindle. You can get a new one for <$100, then give your wife a certificate to buy $200 worth of books for it!

To the poster who said his/her sister got a Kindle and it's unused: did she even TRY it? As I wrote, I used to be the type that would NEVER read on an ebook reader ... 'til I bought a Kindle. I imagine those who buy nooks or other e-readers feel the same way. I would bet that 99% of those who try one for half an hour will love it.

I am going to a conference in a few weeks and my Kindle will be going with me, as I read every night before turning off the lights. Wish I'd had one when I took a 10-day trip to England a few years ago!!

Agree 100% with Karen. I have talked a lot of people into Kindles/Nook e-readers over the years. Every single one said "but I like books!I won't like it!"
Every single one was beyond happy. There are so many ways to get free books. You can carry 1,000's of them on your device. It takes no room in a carry on. The screen is very readable.

I agree. No one I know reads as much as I do and I have a Kindle collecting dust somewhere in a drawer in my house.
My wife has not used hers.
No books on the ipad, either.

Sometimes if I really want a book and I can't wait, I use my kindle app on my cell phone. *shrug*

Make sure that's really something she wants.
Ipad as a reader kind of sucks. Too big and unwieldy.

well, i think iPad mini will be suitable, or if it is a little high, Kindle is also a good choice.

You 2 are the exception. Not the rule.
I'd say there is a close to 90% chance she would love a Kindle/Nook.
