This doesn't sound right. If it's really using GPS (not in simulator mode), it should be remembering what you enter for destinations.

No, it won't until it manages to sync with the satellites. Until then it will assume you are whereever you were when you last turned it off.

It may or may not be your error. You can enter a new destination as a "via" or as a replacement destination. It's an easy thing to do 'wrong'. And if you have an existing destination, the GPS will keep trying to send you there until you either replace it or remove it (on my older Nuvi that's the 'stop sign' on the starting page that lets you enter a destination).

If you remove it from a power source, it will warn you of that and will offer to power down unless you choose to keep it 'on' - could that be why it powered down? I don't know whether it saves anything if it's in "GPS simulator" - I suspect not since it only really knows where things are located if it's actually using GPS.

Maybe you got a lemon. Make sure your GPS has actually synced with satellites, which can take a few minutes if it's cloudy or if there are buildings blocking satellite access (make sure it's not in "simulator" mode) and experiment more to find out whether you still see these sorts of glitches.
If you replace it from where you bought it, you may get another lemon if there's an entire batch of them. So you may be better off contacting Garmin directly.
