There is a lot to be said for a single simple channel changer with big buttons

I think this topic is useful and will only become a bigger issue as more elderly folks face a bewildering choice of content on the TVs that are a vital connection / piece of entertainment.

I know of a few companies that are creating remote controls that are specifically designed to offer the simplest button layout -- https://flipperremote.com/ Get the Weemote. Programmable remote for kids, children and seniors. FAQ

There are plenty of TVs made for the "hospitality market" that designed to "lock out" the various menus and inputs that often are the bane of someone with reduced ability to navigate complicated onscreen user interfaces; with enough demand from consumers and perhaps some coordination from organizations that represent places that serve seniors in assisted living and similar locations I am sure TV makers would put more of these models into mainstream stores.

The are ways to use the more sophisticated home automation type systems to simplify TV controls too BUT the key is that not all devices (TVs, soundbars, set top boxes, etc) report back their "state" to the control system. Those that do let the control know whether they are "on or off" and which "input" is truly active are easy to include a "always reset to the desired state" step while those do not have the ability to respond to "reset all" add to the frustration...

There's a lot more to be said about taking 30 minutes to USE YOUR BRAIN AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW.
I'm sorry, you cannot convince me that 'old people' cannot learn to use a remote... especially when they get simpler and simpler now... NOT the other way around. (Remotes...not old people )

I hope not. I'm optimistic when I saw an 85 year old woman a few months back at the hospital while waiting for an xray flat out school another 66 year old woman on why she loves her iPad and the younger woman was 'crazy' for not embracing this brave new world. Wish I could have filmed it.

Does it get easier?

Taught my 66 yr old and 70 yr old in laws how to use that and they're doing amazing with it.

And two others for our Fire TV. LOL. Believe me it gets tougher as you age. I'm 70 and I can tell I'm having a harder time with complex things.

^^ Yes, this. I'm not there yet. I pride myself on having a very good memory and I also think if you don't use it you will lose it. I'm 55. There are exceptions, but the brain cells decline no matter what. It's natural and there's no way around it. I see that when I watch movies. I can actually watch a movie and get more than half into it before I realize I've already seen it. I've seen so many over the years that the database in my brain is out of space it seems, lol.
