Does anyone know of an mp3 player (other than the iPod Touch which is beyond my budget at $229+ tax) that has a built-in speaker? In other words you don't need to use either earpieces or a speaker dock to hear the music.

I've tried doing a search for it but all I get are pages upon pages of external speakers for mp3 players, lol

Because of some specific ear problems I can't use anything in or directly on the ear, but would like to have some music while walking.

Any ideas, or is the iPod Touch the only game in town when it comes to having a built-in speaker?

Got to think outside the box. Buy a used smartphone on ebay. If it has a speakerphone then it has speakers.

Hm, I never thought of using a smartphone instead. Never had one, in fact. So, the phone would work as a music player even without being connected to a cellphone plan of any type?

And... as long as the phone has a microSD card slot, I would put my own music onto the phone by that method... right?

All cellphones stay active even w/o an acct attached to them. It's part of the 911 law and a reason people donate their old phones. As to downloading music it just requires enough internal memory to hold your music files and you can transfer them via USB to the phone.

Brilliant! :-)

And I will email my son who is "addicted" to getting a new smartphone every few years and so I bet he has at least one kicking around in a bottom drawer somewhere, so with any luck I won't even have to buy one on eBay, lol

Thanks so much!

iPod nano fifth generation (5G) has a built-speaker. You can find nice used ones on ebay for under $50.
