My Television cost me Brand New in 2004 I think around $3200...I won a local state lottery and won some money so I banked 75%, paid cash for half the TV and financed the rest at 0% for 24 months....

I purchased a Hitachi 42V715 HDTV...

the first bulb that came with the set lasted me 7 years now granted the TV was mostly off except during American Idol Season as that is one show I can't watch....

Had a TV that DIED and moved the Hitachi into the main living space ...and then it became the main TV of heavy use...since then I have replaced the bulb twice once in 2011 and again in 2014

The new problem is that the picture is not as Bright ... its no where near what it use to be...

the second problem is that even with the new bulb there is this red glow (even when the TV is turned off..it stays on screen for about 30 seconds) of a Red glow that goes from the bottom left reaching up to the top right...

Been poking around and my best guess is several issues

1: Dust has accumulated inside BIG TIME

2: the Light Engine..which I am not sure what it really means...I assume all the parts from the LCD chip to the mirrors and the electronics and wires has gone bad..

From I have been reading a new Light Engine could cost (if I could get one) $600-$1400

I have been seeing adds for LED TV 50" at some local stores for ranging in price from $350 to $700

Should I replace the TV, should it be repaired...

Does it need just a good cleaning?

the remote is in great shape and all buttons work
the TV sound is GREAT

the problem is the brightness of the picture and even if its adjusted via contrast and brightness levels to factor its NOT the same as it was new.

Suggestions any one?

With the prices of HDTVs falling so much since 2004, and the advancements in technology, I would never consider spending more than the replacement cost on repairs. I would consider 5 years plenty of time for a TV to last before being replaced. Our 50" Panasonic (LED 1080p) cost $599 two years ago, currently it's $499, and just $100 more for the "Smart TV" version.

The red glow is telling you that you may soon have some smoke to go with your mirrors.

If you can't remove the dust from the light path, just upgrade. I never have understood why people like the mirror technology, except for front projection.

Buy a new TV, budget to buy a soundbar too if you get a lower end TV. Ultra High Def 4K TV are driving down the prices also 80 inch HDTVs are now the $2500 priced TVs
