(situation 1) I have two concrete surveyors monument permanently set in the ground about 400' apart. In between are lots of trees and other people's property. Is there an inexpensive way to mount a radio device on one and go to the other one and get a good bearing angle? The question is regarding some dead trees that are over 70' tall, and whose property are they on and who has responsibility to pay to take them down.

(situation 2) I have two concrete surveyors monument 16' apart. They define a bearing angle that can be projected another 200'. Is there some device that will allow me to trace this line of bearing. I prefer something radio controlled as a laser will be interrupted by intermediate trees. I would like accuracy of at least 2 degrees.

You may have better luck posting in a different forum like "House" instead of consumer electronics.

Hmmm. I don't think radio would be accurate enough, especially since trees could attenuate the signal and create "shadows."

My initial thought is to just use Google sat view or one of the other satellite views. Next would be to get someone with an airplane or drone to take some aerial shots. Third would be to try to walk a line with a GPS (although it could be off by a few yards). Then of course, you could hire a surveyor...

This is long shot but if you can wait until the Fall after the leaves are all gone take a really powerful laser out at night and see if you can reach it. Even if you have to move 10 feet one way or the other.

The other thing you can do is have someone go out at night to one marker with a really good flashlight, you at other marker with compass to get a bearing. Then you can walk it during the day to make sure you end up at marker. If you don't end up at marker adjust your bearing.

Not perfect but fairly close.

Compass.

Both situations require a surveying robot station and reflectors. It would be cheaper and less time consuming to hire a surveyor who owns this $20k unit and flag the line then you attempting to use a laser pointer that beeps when a reflector is hit from multiple directions/heights and doing the geometric calculations yourself. Then you would have to pay an arborist to put it in writing for each of these trees that they are diseased and are a danger to personal property (structure).

But if you have loads of time on your hands then:
