I was wondering this about the Ahmed Mohammed case with the homemade clock and asked this question, but no one is answering. I figured one of you techies could answer this. If the clock he "built" had an electronic display, what would make it tick? I've always thought clocks with LED displays don't make a ticking noise...

mechanical clocks tick, to get an electronic clock to tick all you have to do is play a ticking sound I did not follow the case of Ahmed, I think he hacked a store bought clock. Maybe the model he hack came with ticking sound, maybe he added it himself.

Yeah. I haven't followed it either - too much emotion, too few reliable facts. The making of a clock is a timer chip and a few parts. Grade school and earlier maker stuff. The clock shown looked like a kludge to me. Maybe if it had blue nixie tubes it would have been interesting.

Reverse Engineering Ahmed Mohamed’s Clock… and Ourselves. | Tech Voice

A lot of people who operate out of emotion and fast praise or condemnation just got a lesson. Whether or not it teaches them enough to revise their thinking is up to them.

*shrug* anyone who watched cartoons in the 1940s and 1950s knew how to turn an alarm clock into all sorts of timers. The problem was always getting ACME products to actually ship you safes to drop, TNT, and other good stuff.
