Our new home was wired for surround sound but we have yet to mount any speakers so we have 6 ugly wires coming out of the ceiling where the previous owners kept their surround sound speakers. I'd like to surprise my husband by getting that all remedied when he gets home from traveling. I'm looking for recommendations for a surround sound system with 6 speakers and one of those little rectangle speakers that goes under the TV. We don't need anything fancy since we don't raise the volume up too much with a sleeping baby in the house but I know my husband likes companies like Bose. I'd also prefer white since it goes better with our living room.
Thanks!

My guess is that you should probably talk with your husband about it first. There are so many different possibilities it will make your head spin. Plus, we don't know anything about the rest of your system. You could end up making an expensive mistake.

I agree with the above poster. Your husbands idea of a surround system may be totally different than yours. And yes there are many many different systems out there. And without any knowledgeable idea you could spend a lot of money for the wrong equipment.
Besides the surround speakers you'll also need a receiver that can power the system correctly.
If you're trying to surprise your husband you may want to go to Best Buy and talk to a specialist there in stereo systems and at least get some ideas. Some stores will for a small fee send an expert out to your house to evaluate and recommend what would work for you.

Not only talk to husband first but also do a lot of research. I had to buy a replacement av/receiver. It is 7.1 but currently using just old speakers, 2 front, 2 rear. Researching replacement speakers was mind boggling. There are dozens even with the same manufacturer. And the costs are out of sight high.

Judging by your post, I think you need to talk to your husband.

The new Google Chromecast audio released this week, does away with the need for wires in most cases if you have wi-fi. Your best option may be to spackle over the wires.

Not a fan of Bose. Bose have con so many people to thinking they are a legit player in the home theater/speaker world. I guess if you say it enough, people will actually believe it's true.

How large/small is your room? What is your budget for everything? Do you prefer small or larger speakers?

So you need 7 speakers total. That rectangle thing is for the center speakers. That's where the majority of the voices will come from. The majority of the time, you will also need a receiver and a subwoofer as well. If you are looking for something small or compact:

You may have to buy 2 additional used speakers on ebay to finish up on the 7.1 system.

or something like this:

NHT

You'll need a receiver in the $300 to $400 or so range. Make sure that receiver is capable of 7.1 if you want to maximize all your speakers. Example:

It sounds as if you dont need a really powerful loud surround system so I recommend 40 watt speakers. Bose is the best in my opinion: check out their Bose Acoustimass speaker system (comes in white). Two speakers and woofer produces high quality sound that is a delight to the ears. The system runs around $400 but you also need the amp. Son't cheap out on one. Speakers are really only as good as the amp is. Look at Toshiba and Yamaha brands. Be careful to get one that is not like 120 watt because you could blow lesser wattage speakers by turning the amp up high.
