I'm looking at this to avoid paying ridiculously high cable bills... Any input? (no pun intended)

OK for use if you are near the transmitter. Flat = signals picked up in one direction at the expense of other directions.

You'll get nothing but local OTA broadcasts. You can check here to see what's in range of your location, but a cheap indoor antenna isn't going to get you much.

Not sure what Dave is talking about, and of course, it matters where you live but, I bought a cheap indoor antenna that got me 30 channels. I was hoping to get 6 or 7. Granted of those 30, I may only watch 7 or 8, but still...

If you're close to the towers an indoor may do the job, with an indoor antenna I got a grand total of 1 channel on a good day.

With a homemade antenna I picked up over 24 channels indoors. Took the same homemade antenna and mounted it to my back deck outside and picked up over 30 channels. Both local OTA channels as well as stations two hours up the road from me in Virginia. Before spending a lot of money on an antenna, maybe consider building your own? You can pair it with a pre-amp and that might possibly get you more channels.

Also, if you don't mind $20/month, try out Sling TV. I have SlingTV + Netflix + Amazon (The family shares the cost of Prime) and I probably spend about $29/month on TV. A lot better compared to the $112/month I was spending with DirecTV.

I should add that with Sling TV, you get about 23 Cable channels that includes ESPN, ESPN2, TBS, HGTV, TNT, CNN, etc....I have enjoyed it and use it quite a bit, especially for sports.

Sling doesn't offer the channels I want. I watch only about three, but they tend to be offered only in the "premium" packages, alas...

Which ones do you watch?

Sling does offer HBO for $15 more or an Epix package for $5 more.

Don't make me admit it! TLC. Strictly as a lifelong student of human behavior, mind you. Also TCM and HGTV.
