I own a HTR-5960 which is probably very similar. I think mine is a 7 channel and 115w per channel but I use it in either 5.1 mode for some movies or stereo for movies and music. I've had it for 10 years or more. A rock solid unit and it should work great for you.

Decent is a subjective term. Do you know what brand/ model they are? Even if the are of substantial quality they might be suffering from a poor install.

The best thing to do would be to hook them up and playback music you are familiar with. If they are of high quality but sound terrible it might be worth it to have them installed properly.
