Hi,
have a finished basement.
just bought a ViewSonic PJD5155 SVGA DLP Projector, 3200 Lumens, HDMI, Black for $300 from Amazon, and a 120" manual screen.

Can you please recommend an audio system in the under $300 range?

Also, do I absolutely need a 'receiver'? I ONLY want to use this theater system to:

1. connect to the internet
2. Watch Netflix

You can always buy a sound bar, but the good ones are quite expensive. The new TVs are Internet ready, and have the Netflix app you may want to use. Just search for "the best TV sound bars under $300.00."

No you don't need a receiver, you can connect the speakers to your netflix device directly via 3.5 headphone jack or RCA out, or blue tooth depending on the device. Those wires can connect to a powered speaker system.

The receiver is more for centralizing a bunch of different inputs and sending then to the same output device. The receiver is also typically an amplifier to drive powered subwoofers and non powered speakers.

If you get powered speakers, you don't need a receiver.

I just picked up a VIZIO S3821w-C0 38" soundbar a few months ago, and I'm quite impressed with the output. My TV is an older Vizio VX37L, and the soundbar is lightyears better. I think it was around $170 as a refurb unit directly from Vizio.
