Now that I routinely use my smartphone as my navigation device in the car, is there anything I can do with an outdated Tom Tom One (which doesn't get any map updates for free or traffic updates)? Is it possible to hack it and use it as a 2nd screen for my phone (most ideal option)? I've heard of people installing custom ROMs into those devices but mainly to use them as, say, music players.

A lot of GPS units run Windows CE and are hackable to a certain degree. There are folks who have created menu systems for them, and I've done a certain amount of playing in the the past on a couple GPS units I own. One of them has a nice SD card slot, and I can load a number of things on that unit and have it function. Sort of a fun toy.

That said ... I think TomTom uses a Linux variant on their units.

You can do a Google search to find out what options you might have. I'm not sure anything I used 3-4 years ago still exists, and I probably can't post links to it in this forum anyway. The GpsPasSion Forums are one good place to start, I guess.
