I would like to use my father's 80s Altec Lansing tower speakers with my desktop computer. What is a good inexpensive digital amplifier that i need to buy in order to make this happen? I don't want one too big. Thanks.

Do you have a 3.5mm line out on your computer? Just use a 3.5mm stereo to RCA cable/adapter and plug that into an old receiver with line level input. You may even find those receiver free on craigslist.

You need an amp between your computer and the speakers. Amazon has lots of them for 20-50. You'd use the audio line out connector. Should be lime green.

Just look at the amazon reviews. These things can be so cheap that they're throw aways if they don't meet your needs.

If you buy, don't forget speaker wire (any old two wire pair will do. Lamp cord is traditional but overkill), and a connector cable from your computer to the amp. Probably a cable with two 3.5mm stereo male plugs but could be one 3.5mm and two male RCA plugs. You'd need to read the amp specifications.

Have you examined the cone edges? If they are foam rubber they have probably deteriorated and turned to dust. I have two sets of high-end vintage speakers that I had to rebuild. You can purchase the rebuild kits which come with the foam rubber cone edges and adhesive. They sound like new again after the rebuild.

If you have bluetooth enabled sound source (e.g. phone, tablet, computer with bluetooth) you can connect it to an amp/receiver wirelessly (sorta...still need connectors) using a device like the following...then output the sound via (wired) connected speakers.

Esinkin Bluetooth Receiver, Bluetooth Audio Adapter

Yea, if your computer is so old as to not have a 3.5 mm haedphone type jack, you need a new computer. (In other words, yes you do have one).
