three family members, three generations, want to "write" about something we all experienced. I am past writing. I need some suggestions for a modern recording device that is extremely user friendly.

Digital Voice Recorders

Decent ones should start around $20. Have you thought of using a smartphone?

Here's a bunch on Amazon.

I am not a cell phone person and I think the buttons would be too small;

Thank you for the links and a name for what I am looking for.

So you actually want a recording device with a tape, like a digital voice recorder?
Check those on Amazon:

May or may not be repetition of what others have indicated, but any Smartphone with, or without, a data plan can act as a "tape recorder". You'd first need to download an app from somewhere via WiFi, like SmartRecorder for Android. There are tens or dozens of similar apps, I occasionally use that one.

Once that's up, on a non-connected smartphone, voila: voice recorder, and so much more: can be used for any number of offline apps, as a bookreader, camera, endless possibilities. Move the voice files onto a computer, the Cloud, or memory cards. The smartphone can be a refurb, something a couple years old and mostly obsolete (like my Samsung Note 3, traded in almost two years ago in excellent condition for about $100).

No dealing with "tape" or other 20th Century obsolete 1970s garbage. Been-there/done-that myself when I was a pre-teen through early High School, it was ponderous and stupid then but that's what we had available.

Easy-pleasy. If you want to be clever, use a Bluetooth speaker phone as your recording device (or any headset, of course: I have a Plantronics used with my Smartphone because the voice quality is hugely better).

I had a digital voice recorder, used from about 2003-2009 until the above made them mostly obsolete.

thank you for responding. You must have only read the thread title

Your post illustrates how difficult it is for a Luddite to get practical advice . I could have asked a family member but I didn't want to burden them with my ignorance. This project is something to do together when we are so far apart and they still have very busy, quick paced lives.

In my world, things don't get "made obsolete". You use them until they wear out

I appreciate the help I found here
