My parents who are past age 80, like cable TV. In 2009 the cable company went all digital and set top boxes became mandatory and the F type coaxial input became obsolete.

My parents always figure out a way to reset the TV to the over the air tuner, where all they get is static. It happens so often that I am thinking of replacing their TV with a monitor that has no tuner.

The problem is that the speakers are so tiny in these monitors and they are also hard of hearing.

Ideally it would be nice if I could disable the tuner and keep the input on a single HDMI input.
Do you have any suggestions?

Are they losing it mentally? Can you not teach them?

Why not those universal remotes that have programmable buttons? I have a Logitech one where I have the Watch TV button programmed to turn on TV and set it to the right input, turn on AV receiver and set it to the right source and then cable box. If anything goes out of wack I just press the Help button and it runs the programming again to resynch everything.

This...Harmony remotes get my vote. Here's one with big buttons and a good sized screen:

They liked when TV's had a single remote and one input and there were no set top boxes.

Well, times have changed and if they still have their mental capabilities they can learn a new remote. I taught my dad to program his VCR...

I spoke to my mother's friend who had cancelled cable to save money when she became widowed a decade earlier. I commented that at least she could still watch DVD's which can often be borrowed from the library for free. She had no idea that the DVD player worked without cable. (Where we live there is no ABC/CBSNBC/FOX/CW antenna signal).

A classic sci-fi short story turns age 60 this year-The Feeling Of Power; Isaac Asimov (1958).

Most TV's have a an Input Sensor. When the Input Sensor feature is turned on, your TV automatically detects which video jacks have devices connected to them and turned on. Your TV uses this information to determine what options you can select on the INPUT SOURCE list when you press INPUT.

I noticed that some TV's jump to the RF antenna input when they lose connection with another device (like the cable set top box). Turning the Input Sensor tooff seems to have radically reduced the number of times that the input was inadvertently changed. My parents don't have to call me to reset it.

I noticed that each TV is different, even two with same brand.
Hopefully that advice will help someone.

Figure out which button it is and super glue it. if they can't push it they can't screw up the TV input. I did that with the button on my SUV remote that opens the rear window. It kept getting pushed in my pocket.
