I am in need of a data-cord for my smartphone that not just charges my phone but also can do data transmission. The old one does not function all the time ...

How does one know if the cable purchased can do both?
Apparently, some cords only do the charging part.

So how does one order the right part?
TIA

The term you're looking for is Micro-USB "data cable." The cable that only charges is a "charging cable." Charging cables have fewer pins in the connector than a data cable.

That might explain why I get nada when I connect my phone to my PC. Sometimes even us techs are clueless.

Now I have to figure out if any of my cables are data cables.

Apparently not.

Is there anything besides a special "cable checker" to find out if charge only or Charge/DataXfer

Ha! Interesting! I didn't know they exist and what they do. So I Googled it and found this forum:

I also found that. Not a lot to help there except testing the cable.

I found some on Amazon. If it ever becomes important I'll order some.

Right now I use this little doodad. And of course they are no longer available. I've copied thousands of pictures from phone to tablet and computer using mine. Great when traveling. I've had it for 5 years.

Edit: found it here. Other places likely. https://www.rakuten.com/shop/bluemal...CABEgJ04_D_BwE

You should be able to check for continuity with multi-meter.

That makes a lot sense. Never really considered something like that.
