I'm looking to buy a CD player that can turn off automatically, so that I can play it when going to sleep. It just needs speaker and no need of earphones. A simple, stand alone one. Any recommendations for an expensive one (< $$30 possible with good quality?).

Stand alone players are kind of a thing of the past. Still available but slowly fading. The turning off part can be achieved with a timer, I doubt you could find one with that feature built in, especially for less than $30.

Whether you are looking for a portable or a home unit, you will need some kind of amplification and speakers. The solution would be a CD boombox. The under $30 will get you an off-brand, a Sony or similar will be more.

These are from Walmart. Amazon would be another place to look.

Why does the CD player have to 'shut off'?

At the end of the CD, the music/player stops.

Sure, it is still powered on, but so what? The power draw of any such player would be minuscule.

Thanks. OK, so I'll spend maybe 50ish. Could the cheap ones damage the CD?

As long as it doesn't damage the CD somehow, should be ok.

No CD player is going to 'damage' your CD.

Good to know. I was afraid it might suddenly spin backward

Lol. It's not a vinyl record and there is no "needle".

The needle in this case is a laser and nothing ever makes physical contact with the CD.

What if I buy a CD player (e.g. like this), and use my PC's external speakers on it? I suppose there is a place to plug in external speakers, separately from the earphone jack?

No, you would connect speakers to the headphone jack. There's no separate jack for speakers.

Ok, so that should work on all those with a headphone jact. So I don't necessarily need a boombox, just a CD player that has the headphone jack, sounds good. Thanks all!
