Here is my problem. I currently have a very old Garmin GPS III that I still use in and out of my vehicle. It has major roads only, is small, and allows me to see where I have been. It's great but the screen is failing, and I am looking for another GPS (not a personal navigation help me find a Chinese restaurant and take the next left turn variety).

I take it hiking and want it to be very portable. It seems everything on the market wants to show me some video representation of the highway and does not show me the "tracks" of my route as my current GPS does. I do not really need it to talk to me.

I am a very cartesian coordinate kind of person who wants position and tracking information only with the added feature of including major roads and letting me download hiking information to my laptop for future reference. Any ideas?

I have a Garmin GPSMap 60c, and love it. It will do everything you mentioned, plus it has routing as well. The successor to that model is the GPSMap 60Cx.

If all you need is waypoints, tracks and a basemap of major roads, look at the eTrex series - they do exactly that, and nothing more.

Thanks much. This looks like what I am after. I'm going to spend some time going through the on-line manual for all the details.
