This Rails with Trails project will eventually provide a 19-mile paved biking/walking path alongside the railroad tracks that meander through the mountains between Cookeville and Monterey. But the Cookeville City Council just approved the trail designer for the first 4 miles which will start at the Depot in downtown Cookeville, go up past the Farmers Market and on up to Tennessee Tech University, then out past Candyland Park and on into downtown Algood.

While I'm still not sure how the Algood to Monterey segment is going to work out, I'm excited for this first section!

I'm happy this project is moving forward. Hopefully I'll be able to use the bike trail when I retire in this area.

Rail trail project in Monterey too costly » Knoxville News Sentinel

I have to agree with Ken Hall. Dont get your hopes up jguillot. But if Im wrong, and I hope I am, you better start training because it is some pretty rugged terrain.

Who knows when/if this trail will ever be completed all the way to Monterey, but it looks like at least the Cookeville-Algood section will happen. With only 4.3 miles separating downtown Cookeville from downtown Algood, it shouldn't take long for this to get done.

It would be nice to see the plans/layout of the trail. I'm glad they are finally getting something done.

Agreed. I'd love to see where this is going to go.

At any rate, as of last night all of the government entities involved have voted to pay up: Algood, Cookeville, and Putnam County. So, hopefully, work will begin within the next few weeks.

Construction has started, but the official groundbreaking will be on Sept 15, 10am, at the Russell Stover building.

Here's a map of the trail:

The 4.23 mile section connecting downtown Cookeville to downtown Algood is about 80 percent complete. The entire trail should be completed by the first of September. Cookeville Mayor Shelton released a picture of the portion of the trail that lies behind Tennessee Tech's Foundation Hall:
