COOKEVILLE -- A four-year-old child was bitten by a copperhead snake in Burgess Falls State Park on Saturday afternoon, according to the Putnam Sheriff's Dept.
The child was airlifted from the park area to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga and is said to be doing well in his recovery.

Putnam Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Dale Abston said Angie Isham, of Meadow Road, Cookeville, was visiting the park with her four-year-old son and other children on Saturday about 3:30 p.m. when the boy "stepped on a snake."

"The child thought he stepped on a stick, but he started crying and his mother saw bite marks on his foot," the deputy said.

The snake slithered away, but someone in the group reportedly saw it and described a copperhead, he said.

The mother quickly brought her son to a parking lot area and contacted Jeremy Vaden, the park ranger, who radioed for an ambulance, Deputy Abston said.

I been looking at moving here compared to staying in MI. We don't have the poison animals like you do.

We also have ferocious marauding dogs, some cheetahs that got loose and a few rogue elephants but those have mostly been rounded up.

And midsized crocodiles that crawl into the sewer system and come up through our commodes. But only the downstairs ones.

I would say a snake bite is a lot less probable than an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Terrible it had to happen and I am glad he is doing okay. It's very good that everyone reacted so quickly.
