There are a couple of pictures on the Cookeville page that obviously aren't Cookeville!

Good luck!

Yeah seriously, how did that happen?? Some of those pictures look like they're either Louisiana or Florida or some other swampy flat place.

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I are in Florida and have begun to search out Tennessee for a new life...we have a friend who recommended the Cookeville area. We have 2 young children 5 and 10 so a good elementary and middle school is of importance to us. can anyone especially JMT advise us which area would be better for us to look with this?
Many Thanks,
Grace

Right now, Putnam County (Cookeville) has an open school system, meaning your kids can go to any school in the county no matter where you live. However, they might be bringing that to an end as some of the schools are getting pretty overcrowded.

Algood School is probably the most popular, and it's also the most overcrowded. It's currently a K-8 school and is in a fast-growing and very desirable area. That would probably be most people's first choice.

Are you looking for a more rural setting or do you want to live in town?

As far as elementary schools in Cookeville, they're all good but Capshaw is probably the highest ranked. It's right in the middle of town and has one of the state's largest programs for gifted students.

You don't really have a choice in middle schools in Cookeville since one of them is a 5-6 school and the other is a 7-8 school. That's probably one of the reasons the K-8 format is so popular in Algood; kids don't have to change schools every other year.

At any rate, Putnam County's school system is outstanding. When your kids get to the high school level, they'll have the option of participating in the International Baccalaureate Program at Cookeville High, one of only 5 high schools in the state with the IB program (the other 4 are in the Nashville area).

Let us know what else you'd like to know about Cookeville. It really is a fantastic town, easily one of the jewels in Tennessee. I hope to live there myself someday, too.

Good luck!

I especially like "Malabar Sunrise". Yeah, that says "Cookeville" to me . . . palm trees, ocean breezes. ;-)
