Not sure this bit of news merits a stand alone thread, but...we'll see how it goes. A rumor has started that Nissan may be looking to build an engine plant in the Highlands Business Park....this is only a piece of information that I have heard third or fourth-hand at this point.

The idea makes some sense with I40 and the proximity to Smyrna....Nissan has an engine plant near I 24 in Decherd....so...I asked why not the 840 corridor? The reply was tax incentives; so, this could turn in to something real....but it is too early to speculate anything other than it being just a rumor at this point.

Whoa, that would be huge news! I've always thought that Nissan would be wise to build a plant in the region, what with a ready supply of engineers at Tennessee Tech and great highway and rail access. Of course, there's no rail access at the Highlands park but I suppose that's not as important these days. You don't suppose that this is the mysterious "Project Uno"?

For some reason....I don't think it's Uno...but that doesn't bar it from actually being the company behind Uno.

You could be on to something. Didn't Mayor Shelton hint that Academy and Project Uno were "just the beginning," that there were more big projects in the pipeline? I just assumed he meant retail, but I wonder if he was referring to things like this, too. I do know that I'm getting tired of driving past the Highland Business Park on I-40 and not seeing any work done on the new interchange. I'm pretty eager to see that started. Once that's completed, we won't recognize that part of Putnam County.

Fast-tracked must mean something slightly less quick to TDOT. Although, I do understand it jumped the queue of quite a number of backlogged projects.

Most all auto companies gave up on rail years ago favoring 'just in time' truck shipping. The Ford plants that I worked at tore out the rail heads for manufacturing space. Some assembly plants will use rail for long distance shipping of assembled vehicles. You are correct that rail access is not much of a criteria these days.
